Piazza di Spagna
The piazza is characterized by the great
staircase of Trinità dei Monti, the famous “Spanish
Steps”, constructed in the 18th century, at the
foot of which is the elegant “Barcaccia” fountain
by Pietro Bernini.
At the top of the staircase can be seen an Egyptian obelisk, behind which
rises the church of Santa Trinità dei Monti, dating
from 1495.
The area is famous the world over for the presence of numerous
boutiques of Italian fashion designers: Armani,
Versace, and Valentino are only some
of the names you will see as you walk around between Piazza di Spagna
and the elegant Via Condotti.
For some years now, the staircase has become the stage for high
fashion shows in Rome.
From Piazza di Spagna it is possible to reach, by going up the steps,
the panoramic terrace known as the Pincio, which offers
one of the most charming panoramas of the city.
